the road less traveled
Iam a champion of words as the gateway to direct experience, and bring this love to my work as both an editor and writer. It’s an ongoing journey of discovery because the less conspicuous I am, the more the work is free to take on a life of its own.
I have 25 years’ experience in the Australian media as a copy-editor, sub-editor and production editor. Knowing what makes good writing and good editing has been the marrow of my working life. But while my job provided an income, it alone could not provide a living.
I cannot separate my sensibility as a writer and editor from my evolution as a conscious human being at this time of tumultuous change on the planet.
A desire to overcome the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder from childhood, exacerbated by acute sensitivity, led me all over the globe.
After spending eight years in talk therapy, I had exhausted its limits and became far more adventurous in my pursuit of not just healing, but ultimately, a sense of meaning that would dignify human suffering.
I immersed myself in the world of plant-spirit healing and shamanic energy medicine in Peru, Brazil, Germany and the Californian desert as part of what is a psychedelic renaissance now being validated by science as a missing link in healing complex trauma.
My passion is for where the vastly different worldviews and cosmologies of Western psychology and indigineous healthcare intersect: science and spirituality. It gives me a unique persepctive on how to break out of the linear confines of language.
SHAPESHIFTING
As any shamanic practitioner will tell you, the unseen world is the crucible of dreams and memories. And writing itself is a form of shapeshifting that allows the reader to cross imaginal thresholds.
There is no such thing as an objective observer. An editor leaves traces of their own consciousness on the writer’s work. Thus it is important that I am committed to my ongoing work of making the unconscious conscious; to strip away the self-affirming biases that leave subtle imprints.
As an editor, I do not suffer poor writing (but I love fixing it). While working to multiple daily deadlines has sharpened my editor’s blade, I do not wield it with bloody flourish. I am sensitive to the writer’s authentic voice and wary of literalism that stymies creative flow.
I take the role of temporary custodian of your message very seriously. I am meticulous and slightly obsessive. That’s to your benefit and everyone else’s chagrin.

WORDS AS LIVING SPIRIT
My philosophy
The dervish spins and spins, abandoning worldly orientation for the pure center of God. Similarly, a great centrifugal force pulls in all the disparate experiences of our lives into a coherent unity.
This symbolism, drawn from the mystical branch of Islam, is a reminder that life makes no mistakes. All my experiences have cultivated a desire to bridge the gap between science and spirituality, and between healing culturally sanctioned trauma and social change.
I believe language can transcend its own linear limitations by recognizing words as living spirit rather than mere symbolism alone. That’s a heady idea but all it means is that a dynamic text can speak to multiple levels of reality, and meet the reader exactly where they are in any given moment.
Making a work accessible should never come at the expense of truths that are—by necessity—hidden between the lines. Why? Because it is in their very discovery that the reader is unraveled.
